Classic French Toast

Golden custard-soaked bread with warm spices and crispy edges.
Ingredients
- 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread
- 4 large eggs
- 125ml whole milk
- 60ml heavy cream
- 30g granulated sugar
- 5ml vanilla extract
- 3g ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- 30g butter
- Powdered sugar for dusting
- Maple syrup for serving
Steps
- Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt
- Pour mixture into shallow dish
- Heat large skillet over medium heat
- Add butter and let melt
- Dip bread slices in egg mixture, coating both sides
- Let excess drip off
- Cook in skillet until golden brown on first side
- Flip and cook until golden on second side
- Transfer to warm plates
- Dust with powdered sugar
- Serve immediately with maple syrup
Notes
Use day-old bread for best absorption. Don't soak too long or bread will fall apart.
