Traditional Baklava

Flaky phyllo pastry layered with nuts and soaked in honey syrup.
Ingredients
- 500g phyllo pastry, thawed
- 400g mixed nuts (walnuts, pistachios, almonds), chopped
- 250g unsalted butter, melted
- 10g ground cinnamon
- 300g sugar
- 250ml water
- 200ml honey
- 15ml lemon juice
- 2 whole cloves
Steps
- Preheat oven to 180°C and brush baking dish with butter
- Mix chopped nuts with cinnamon
- Layer half the phyllo sheets, brushing each with melted butter
- Spread nut mixture evenly over phyllo
- Layer remaining phyllo on top, brushing each sheet with butter
- Cut into diamond or square shapes before baking
- Bake 45-50 minutes until golden and crispy
- Meanwhile, make syrup by boiling sugar, water, honey, lemon juice, and cloves
- Simmer syrup 10 minutes, then remove cloves
- Pour hot syrup over warm baklava immediately after baking
- Let cool completely to absorb syrup
- Serve at room temperature
Notes
Keep phyllo sheets covered with damp towel to prevent drying. Cut before baking for clean edges.
