Irish Soda Bread

Traditional Irish quick bread with a tender crumb and slightly tangy flavor from buttermilk.
Ingredients
- 500g all-purpose flour
- 8g baking soda
- 8g salt
- 400ml buttermilk
- 30ml honey
Steps
- Preheat oven to 200°C
- Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt in large bowl
- Make well in center of dry ingredients
- Mix buttermilk and honey together
- Pour wet ingredients into well
- Stir just until dough comes together
- Turn onto floured surface and gently knead 4-5 times
- Shape into round loaf about 20cm across
- Place on parchment-lined baking sheet
- Cut deep cross on top with sharp knife
- Bake 30-35 minutes until golden brown
- Tap bottom of loaf - should sound hollow
- Cool on wire rack 20 minutes before slicing
- Serve warm with butter
Notes
Don't overmix or the bread will be tough. The cross helps the bread bake evenly and prevents cracking.
