A classic American layer cake with subtle chocolate flavor, striking red color, and tangy cream cheese frosting.
Ingredients
- 250g all-purpose flour
- 200g sugar
- 15g cocoa powder
- 5g baking soda
- 3g salt
- 240ml buttermilk
- 120ml vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 30ml red food coloring
- 15ml vanilla extract
- 15ml white vinegar
- 225g cream cheese, softened
- 115g butter, softened
- 400g powdered sugar
- 10ml vanilla extract
Steps
- Preheat oven to 175°C
- Grease two 23cm round cake pans
- Mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt
- Combine buttermilk, oil, eggs, food coloring, vanilla, and vinegar
- Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients
- Mix until just combined
- Divide batter between prepared pans
- Bake for 30 minutes until toothpick comes out clean
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes
- Turn out onto wire racks
- Cool completely
- Beat cream cheese and butter until fluffy
- Gradually add powdered sugar
- Beat in vanilla extract
- Place one layer on serving plate
- Spread frosting on top
- Add second layer
- Frost top and sides
