Classic French grilled ham and cheese sandwich topped with creamy béchamel sauce.
Ingredients
- 8 slices white bread
- 300g thinly sliced ham
- 200g Gruyère cheese, grated
- 40g butter
- 40g all-purpose flour
- 400ml whole milk
- 3g nutmeg
- 30g Parmesan cheese, grated
- 15g Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
Steps
- Preheat oven to 200°C
- Make béchamel by melting butter, whisking in flour for 2 minutes
- Gradually add milk, whisking until smooth and thickened
- Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg
- Spread mustard on 4 slices of bread
- Layer ham and half the Gruyère on mustard side
- Top with remaining bread slices
- Brush tops with béchamel sauce
- Sprinkle with remaining Gruyère and Parmesan
- Bake 10-15 minutes until golden and bubbly
- Serve immediately while hot
Notes
For Croque Madame, top with a fried egg. Use day-old bread for better texture that won't become soggy.
